Squirrels

Squirrel Control & Removal

Squirrels are a common type of rodent found all over the United States, with three species calling Oklahoma home: the Eastern gray squirrel, the Southern flying squirrel and the fox squirrel. Fox squirrels are the largest by far and tend to have reddish brown fur. Gray squirrels are usually gray but may also be black, and are only about half the size and weight of a fox squirrel. Flying squirrels are much smaller and have the unique ability to glide using a special skin membrane.

Squirrels will eat just about anything but nuts and seeds are their favored foods. Gray and fox squirrels are diurnal and can be readily observed raiding your bird feeders at any time of day. Flying squirrels are nocturnal and you probably won’t see them unless they get into your house.

Signs of a Squirrel Infestation

If you start to hear scratching or scurrying sounds coming from your attic, there are probably squirrels inside. Though not nearly as loud as larger animals like raccoons, squirrels can still make an impressive amount of noise for their size. However, squirrels rarely vocalize, which is why infestations often go undiscovered for a long time. This is also the best way to differentiate squirrels from rats, which will squeak a lot while living in your home.

Problems With Squirrels

Squirrels are persistent and destructive pests that love to file their teeth by gnawing on everything around them. Given the strength of their incisors, squirrels can cause a shocking amount of damage in a short time. They’ll chew their way through insulation, drywall, wood, PVC, sheet metal and electrical wires once they find their way inside your attic. Squirrels gnawing on wiring is especially problematic, since this may lead to a fire in your house.

Squirrels will also produce a foul odor with their urine and droppings, which may be your first sign of them if you don’t hear them up in your attic. There are a number of diseases and parasites spread by squirrel waste, including leptospirosis, tularemia, salmonella and ringworms. Squirrels are also known to carry rabies, though this is very rare.
